Stag Party

Dear Sage, This is the saddest song in the world for me...

Never Been To Me

Hey lady, you lady
cursing at your life
you're a discontented mother
and a regimented wife
I have no doubt
you dream about the
things you never do
but I wish someone
had talked to
me like I wanna talk to you

Oh, I've been to Georgia
and California
and anywhere I could run

Took the hand of a preacher man
and we
made love in the sun
But I ran
out of places
and friendly faces
Because I had to be free
I've been to paradise
but I've
never been to me...

Please lady
please lady
don't just walk away
Cause I have this need to tell you

why I'm all alone today

I can see so much of me
still living in your eyes
won't you share a part
of a weary heart that has
lived a million lives

Oh, I've been to Nice
and the isle of Greece
when I sipped champagne on a yacht
I moved like Harlow in Monte Carlo
and showed them what I've got
I've been undressed by kings
and I've seen some things
that a woman ain't s'pose to see
I've been to paradise
but I've never been to me...

Hey, you know what paradise is?
It's a lie
a fantasy we created
about people and places

as we like them to be
but you
know what truth is?
it's that
little baby you're holding

and it's that man you fought with this morning

the same one you are gonna make love to tonight

that's truth that's love

Sometimes I've been to crying for unborn children
that might have made me complete
but I, I took the sweet life
I never knew I'd be bitter from the sweet
I spent my life exploring
the subtle whoring
that costs too much to be free
hey lady I've been to paradise
but I've never been to me...

I've been to paradise but I've never been to me...

Even before I understood the lyrics it used to give me goosebumps everytime it gets aired over the radio. It's about a free spirit/callgirl who was able to have countless adventures with powerful men in the most glorious places on Earth (Greece, Nice, Georgia) and how the road of excess led her to the empty palace of wisdom... and how she desperately wish she could take it all back to lead a simple, decent life.

During my stag party, my friends gave me one. And this song kept on playing in my head. IT saved me, and her. Because even though I had the balls, I didn't have the stomach. I politely refused. Ofcourse it's a huge disadvantage on my part-- everyone in the room, except the girl ofcourse, thought I was gay.

But that's the ennobling power of music. It helps even bastards like me find our humanity lurking within.

Anyway, the beautiful portrait is of Lady Hamilton. She's the mistress of Lord Nelson, the Legendary Admiral who was more beloved by the english people than Diana even when she was still alive. The picture is in the cover of a paperback copy of Wuthering Heights. That's where I first saw her.

I didn't know she was a "Free spirit" too. I found that out the other night when I accidentally came across a wikipedia entry. I was disappointed. For years I didn't know that the most mesmerizing eyes captured on canvass belonged to a girl who probably led a life gloomed by an imperfect past. She was mistress of Lord Nelson, she probably was able to get whatever she wanted in life-- except a second chance (like the lady in the song).

This makes me wonder, had the girl in my stag party looked like Emma Hamilton, would I have refused?

Please visit
www.dennisandlei.blogspot.com
and wish them both well!!!
They will be tying the knot this month.
And No. I was not invited to the stag party.

Death of Che (Oct 9)

Dear Sabine, The real essence of Halloween is that Christ's triumph over the Devil is so absolute that all evil has lost the power to really scare us.

Just like Che Guevarra here (the poster behind you, Sabe.) During the 60's, his picture was feared by those in the non-communist world. Now, after the defeat of communism, he's become a harmless icon of a bygone era. Just like garfield (the stuffed toy beside you. Even mice fear him not)... Just like the devil.

Christ's victory on the Cross proved that the devil is defeated. Ghosts and witches and goblins are only as real as the plastic and paper that children wear as costume during halloween. The powers they supposedly wield exist in newspaper clippings and books and stupid movies because those are the only places that they can exist. Because thanks to Christ, the defeated enemy has no power to break the laws of Einstein and Newton in this Universe. We celebrate Halloween to remind ourselves that the devil may scare kids but he can't scare adults anymore --Atleast those who believe in the reign of Logic, Truth and Science in God's Universe.

Your Ninong Noey and I loved the movie "Labyrinth" ages ago. Jennifer Connelly quoted something that we should all say to the devil:

"From dangers untold and hardships unnumbered
I've fought my way into the castle beyond the goblin city
to take back the child that you have stolen...
For my will is as strong as yours
and my Kingdom is as Great..."

and then she said the magic words...

"YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ME."

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. To "Fear" means to respect. That's why we must show NO respect to a defeated enemy called the devil for he has no power over you and me anymore. The only power he has is that of a village idiot. Every halloween we kick him around and mock the once mighty enemy who used to scare the wits out of the ignorant. And we have the Lord Jesus Christ to thank for that.

Fear God!

Defy The devil!

Celebrate Halloween!

(this is an old post. somehow I find it necessary to repost it. siguro dahil malapit na oct 9.)

The Gospel According to John... Mayer

"So if you want Love, We'll make it.
Swimmin' a deep sea, of blankets,
Take all your big plans, and break 'em

This is bound to be a while..."-- Your Body is a Wonderland

I'm feeling really religious today. It's a sunday. so while your Mom is still in bed this morning, I read her some religious biblical passages to show her that I'm not the hedonistic sybarite that she thinks I am. Actually, I made her read them to me:

"Thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck... The joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman... Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor... thy breasts to clusters of grapes... And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak..."

Equinox

Dear Sage, there are only two days in a year when the length of Night and Day are almost exactly the same (12 hours each). The first is on every March 20 and is called Vernal Equinox, and the second is on the 22nd of September. it's called Autumnal Equinox.

Bukas, Autumnal Equinox. It is also your school's Family day.

Itutuloy...

Save the Cheerleader, Save the World

Dear Sage, Katatapos nyo lang panoorin ni Sexy ang last episode ng first season ng "Heroes."
I usually sleep through it when you watch it (you've been watching it since a month ago). Your story-telling skill is approaching that of adults. You give your mom the synopsis when she misses an episode.

I caught the last few scenes. Maganda yung sinabi ni Nathan Petrelli:

"The future isn't written in stone."

I heard that line before in another movie. Lawrence of Arabia. When he came back after rescuing from the desert an Arab militia man given up for dead by the superstitious tribesmen, he looked them in the eye and told them with cold steel in his breath.

"Nothing is written."

at sya nga pala, sa "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" din. Instead of surrendering to the assumed inevitable, the character of Linda Hamilton decided to kick ass to save the future-- and she did it.

that's why dont believe manghuhulas like that loonie madame auring and jaime lichauco and rene mariano. okay?

Bye Budapest!

Dear Kids, Your Mommy Ayheen was supposed to attend the IPNA convention in Budapest. But there was a SNAFU committed by the travel agency. The promised VISAs were never issued to them on time. We're really pissed with that agency. But atleast we get to have her to ourselves instead of being thousands of miles away from us, eh? Instead of turning this into a rant against PanMalayan (oops, I slipped) I just want to remember what I was looking forward to when your Mom was about to leave (No Sngl, it's not the chance to finally go to Pegasus). Actually, it was the chance to be at the airport terminal to welcome her back from her trip.

A few days ago, Pretty Tin reminded me of a movie I saw with your Mom. It was an ensemble piece entitled "Love Actually" (I'm sure there has to be a comma there somewhere). Anyway, during the opening scene, Hugh Grant was narrating over an airport scene full of people ecstatically greeting and hugging their loved ones who just got off the plane. He played the english Prime Minister who said that when his Job takes a toll on his sanity, he remembers those scenes from the airport. Then he concluded that Love is actually all around us.

Your Mom and I had the chance to be in the airport arrival terminal either as the one getting off the plane or the one waiting outside to be the first to glimpse the other after a long absence. It's really a spectacular feeling to see her after her trip-- Just like the feeling she felt when she welcomed me after mine. I'm sure that feeling is shared by so many people in that place. and that feeling, of being surrounded by a horde of people with only LOVE in their hearts, is very palpable only in very few places apart from an airport's arrival terminal.

Maybe next time we'll get to see again the thrill and sweet anticipation on the faces of people waiting for their beloved in an International Airport's Arrival Terminal so that I could show you that Love is trully, Actually, Literally all around us.

But next time, we will surely get the services of a different Travel Agency.

Sabine's Favorite Song

Life is a Highway (from the Movie "Cars")

Whooo umm yeah...
Life's like a road that you travel on
When there's one day here and the next day gone
Sometimes you bend, sometimes you stand
Sometimes you turn your back to the wind
There's a world outside ev'ry darkened door
Where blues won't haunt you anymore
Where brave are free and lovers soar
Come ride with me to the distant shore
We won't hesitate
To break down the garden gate
There's not much time left today

[Chorus:]
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Through all these cities and all these towns
It's in my blood and it's all around
I love you now like I loved you then
This is the road and these are the hands
From Mozambique to those Memphis nights
The Khyber Pass to Vancouver's lights

Knock me down get back up again
You're in my blood
I'm not a lonely man
There's no load I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors

[Chorus]

Gimme gimme gimme gimme yeah

[Chorus]

There was a distance between you and I (between you and I)
A misunderstanding once
But now we look it in the eye

Ooooo...Yeah!

There ain't no load that I can't hold
Road so rough this I know
I'll be there when the light comes in
Just tell 'em we're survivors

[Chorus: (x3)]
Life is a highway
I wanna ride it all night long
If you're going my way
I wanna drive it all night long

Gimme gimme gimme gimme yeah

Face of Christ

Dear Sage, a few years back, a Mel Gibson film earned a lot of Kudos and endorsements from critiques and religious leaders alike. Everyone still remembers "The Passion of the Christ"

They say that it realistically depicted the last few hours of the Lord here on Earth before his sacrifice on the cross. Everybody lined up to watch it. Maybe because everyone thought they'd see Christ himself in that movie and how he actually suffered for us.

I refused to watch it. I still do. Because the way I see it, the film only indulges the masochistic vision of Mel Gibson. Needless to say, that is not exactly Gospel truth (But I did watch the other Gibson visceral film, "Apocalypto" because it is devoid of the veneer of hypocrisy palpable in "The Passion")

I'm sure Christ did not look like James Caviezel (did I spell it right?)
I'm sure the last few hours of Christ depicted there were not the most painful moments he has ever experienced.

Why?

There's a song I learned in school that says:

"Whatsoever ye do to the least of my brothers,
that,
you do unto me."

It's a biblical verse. You can google it up. But I hope you'd open the Bible instead to verify it.
So, if you want to see the face of Christ, look at the person beside you. Any amount of pain he suffers from another human being, Christ suffers it too.

These past few days, I never stopped talking to you about the world being full of wicked people who want to hurt others, including kids. IN the news lately is the story of a girl who was kidnapped, molested, then murdered. Her small body was found stuffed inside a suitcase floating in a river together with the stench and all the dregs of society.

She was just Nine years old.

We didn't know her personally but she was a schoolmate of your friend and playmate, Peaches.

She was abducted in front of a branch of KUMON. We pass by it everyday.

Hers is the face of Christ. When she suffered, Christ suffered too. I don't even want to think how she suffered as much as I hate to watch the Mel Gibson gorefest.

May the Lord keep you all safe from harm.

May the Lord grant her peace.

"...He said, "She has a lovely face;
God in his mercy lend her grace,
The Lady of Shallot." --Lord Tennyson

August Twenty One

"When life itself seems lunatic, who knows where madness lies? Perhaps to be too practical may be madness. To surrender dreams, this may be madness. To seek treasures where there is only trash...Too much sanity may be madness, and maddest of all is to see life as it is and not as it should be."-- Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra

The Teacher

Dear Sage, your Lola says that she's so happy with you because you teach Sabine her nursery lessons.

On the other hand, You and Lola told me that Sabine has a pretty steep learning curve.

She actually couldn't wait for you to finish your lessons so that she'd finally have you two as her tutors.

Badge of Courage

Dear Sage, You're proudly showing off your booster shot here. This was taken a few months ago.

You know what? You actually prefer injections over per orem meds (syrup).

Oratio Imperata Ad Petendam Pluviam

"Minsan pa ulan bumuhos ka't h'wag nang tumigil pa
Hatid mo ma'y bagyo,
DALANGIN ITO NG PUSO KONG SUMASAMO
Pag-ibig ko'y umaapaw,
Damdamin ko'y humihiyaw sa tuwa
Tuwing umuulan at kapiling ka
(Oooohhh)"
-- Eraserheads

Dear Sage, the title is the fancy latin phrase imploring the Lord of Creation for rain to stave off the impending water crisis here in the Philippines. A few days ago the situation was becoming desperate; the water levels in the dams were reaching critical thresholds and there was talk of power outtages of biblical proportions (feel free to replace the word "biblical" with "Cory Era") A Filipino Cardinal asked the citizens of the "empire" to pray for rain.

That was last August 3.

Today it's been raining buckets since last night. We were on our way to school when your Mom called me up to tell me that I forgot to bring a paper she wanted faxed ASAP. That was the only excuse I needed to take you back home. The classes were not yet officially suspended when I turned you in (some bureaucrat finally sucked in enough balls to suspend it just now)Well, it's about time. Some streets of Manila are flooded, there's news about a concrete wall that was felled down by heavy downpour somewhere in one of the private subdivisions in the outskirts of the city,

Anyway,

YOU WERE PRACTICALLY KICKING AND SCREAMING AND CRYING WHEN I TOLD YOU THAT YOU'RE NOT GOING TO SCHOOL TODAY.

(hey, click here if you wanna know how much she likes school. Read this similar post I wrote a year ago)

Speaking of latin, Tito Andy Wong sent me an email about the Tridentine Mass. I told him I have reservations about it (Frankly, I'd rather learn French than Latin... Because French chicks are way hotter than those in that Latin speaking city state called Vatican)

But the Lord of Natural Science argued for Tito Andy: When the nation prayed in latin for Rain, Divine Providence listened very hard.

So Tito, regarding our "discussion" about the Tridentine mass of bishop lefebvre, all I can say is...

Touche!

"...Pagmasdan ang ulan,
Unti-unting tumitila

Ikaw ri'y magpapaalam na,

Maari bang minsan pa,
mahagkan ka't maiduyan pa
Sakbibi ka't ulan lamang ang saksi"

Ayheen

Treinte Juillet

Was it just last night?
has it been that long?
I can never tell.
Maybe because
The more I have you
The more I need you
Like a caged beast
crazed by hunger,
craving flesh

I LOVE...
I WANT...
I LUST...

Not even you can end
What even I can't stop.

To My Girlfriend,
Happy Anniversary...

I know you have internet access there...

I know you can read this...

"Better Than Me"

I think you can do much better than me
After all the lies that I made you believe
Guilt kicks in and I start to see
The edge of the bed
Where your nightgown used to be
I told myself I won't miss you
But I remember
What it feels like beside you

I really miss your hair in my face

And the way your innocence tastes

And I think you should know this

You deserve much better than me

While looking through your old box of notes
I found those pictures I took
That you were looking for
If there's one memory I don't want to lose
That time at the mall
You and me in the dressing room
I told myself I won't miss you
But I remember
What it feels like beside you
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
The bed I'm lying in is getting colder
Wish I never would've said it's over

And I can't pretend...

I won't think about you when I'm older

Cause we never really had our closure

This can't be the end
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
I really miss your hair in my face
And the way your innocence tastes
And I think you should know this
You deserve much better than me
(And I think you should know this)
(You deserve much better than me)

I'm Sorry Ayheen...

Junior Inquirer, Sunday Edition, July 22, 2007

Dear Sage,

Yesterday you received a phonecall from the Inquirer informing you that your interview with their paper has been published. I tried in vain to download the part where your picture is from the Inq7 website. In the end we were able to see the Newspaper when we went to the Inquirer office in Mega mall right after we parked the car on the fourth floor to get our grocery. The guy at the front desk was kind enough not to give me an odd look when I asked for a copy of the sunday edition of their broadsheet when it was already 7:30 in the evening. He even gave us the newspaper for free when he learned that people from his office called you up about the picture/interview.

Salamat Vince!

Here's what you said in your first interview with the print media:

"I'm a pet lover so I like "My Little Pony" (book) I pretend that the pony in the book is mine because in real life I only have a guinea pig"

Actually, you told us that that wasn't a verbatim quote. The part where you supposedly said that you wish the pony's yours is editorialized. Thank God! San ako kukuha ng kabayo kung nagkataon?

Masanay ka na sa Media, Anaki. Freedom of the Press is Freedom of Speech. Just remember when you grow up that abuse of speech to hurt innocent people isn't Freedom-- It's simply chismis. Sana'y maging Brodkaster kayo at hindi chismosa.

Dear Sabine, you dressed up your stuffed toy this morning and named it "little Mimzy". I think you were inspired by the video you watched with Ate Sage last week with the same title. You're so proud of it you immediately showed it to me and your Mom.

Last night, your Mom, Lola Letty and I went out to watch a movie. but while waiting for it to start we goofed around with the Simpsons (that's me, bTw, on the other end of the sofa)

Oh, and you are finally going to school now, at three years old. Your Lola Letty, Mommy,  and Ate Sage take turns in teaching you your academics.

And I'll take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth Revelation 21:3-4.

I am your Father, and I love you even as I love my son, Jesus John 17:23. For in Jesus, my love for you is revealed …John 17:26. He is the exact representation of my being Hebrews 1:3 He came to demonstrate that I am for you, not against you Romans 8:31. . And to tell you that I am not counting your sins 2 Corinthians 5:18-19. From Fox News Network who believes that geraldo is a broadcast journalist...

From the people of the Religious Right (American Talibans) who are scared of Harry Potter and Rock n' Roll Music.

From people like McCarthy, Nixon, Chenny and W. bush.

Make America the land of liberty again.

-- from Us who practice the ideals of the age of enlightment outside the American shores.

New Avatars, New Paint, New Home, etc.

This picture will be our new avatar (Thanks for reminding me that I have to change it, Atticus)

Sage, painting her room last month. It was summertime and it was very hot inside that room but you insisted on helping Tito Jong.

Dear Sabine, Yesterday (June 18, 2007) was your first day of school! I wasn't there but your Mom told me that when she dropped you off, you went straight to the classroom and said "Hi" to everyone.

Blovers

Blogger/Lovers. This is a new phenomenon. People meet online, schedule an eyeball, and fall in love. and then write about it in their blogs. No. I'm not one of them. I have yet to meet Katie Holmes online. Ayheen always rolls her eyes in exasperation everytime I say the line " Nak ng tinapa, papatol din pala sya sa matanda e di sakin nalang sana" to this she retorts "sabagay, bansot din naman si Tom, di ba?"

Smartass.

BTW, I'll write about how we should value our privacy, later on, Sage. And how blogging as a whole threatens our civil liberties.

But right now, I'll pretend I'm a romantic. And I'll wish them well. They know who they are.

Letters to my kids about their childhood adventures
